Purpose has always been at the core of KaylaVera' existence, guiding her path and shaping her endeavors. From a young age, she realized the power words hold—not just to communicate but to ignite hope, spark change, and foster love. At 24, KaylaVera’s life journey has been a mosaic of advocacy, academic excellence, and service to others, all driven by an unwavering sense of purpose.
At 14, while still in high school, KaylaVera wrote a song titled “Before I Die” in which a young girl’s story of abuse unfolded, unknowingly foreshadowing the beginning of her advocacy for teen dating violence. The lyrics resonated deeply with her peers, and after performing the song at a school pageant, many girls came forward, revealing that the song mirrored their own experiences of abuse. This moment became the catalyst for KaylaVera’s commitment to raise awareness about teen dating violence. She later founded the Before I Die of Love Organization: Teens Against Dating Violence in 2015, a platform dedicated to educating young people on the importance of healthy relationships. Through her efforts, she has reached over 500 students and inspired them to pledge to be safe in their relationships.
At the heart of her work is her 80,000-word unreleased manuscript, Before I Die of Love, a compelling novel that tells the story of Aaliyah, a high school student navigating the complex and painful world of domestic violence. KaylaVera began writing the book at age 14 and is currently in the editing stage, bringing Aaliyah’s story to life in a way that reflects the experiences of so many young people. Through this project, she hopes to educate, empower, and start conversations about the often-hidden struggles teens face in their relationships. This novel is currently being edited, with the goal of offering both a powerful literary work and a catalyst for change.
In 2017, as a Yale Young Global Scholar, KaylaVera tackled the issue of human trafficking, a topic she felt deeply passionate about. Her project, The Red Lights: Working to Stop Human Trafficking, focused on the effectiveness of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in combating human trafficking across Asia, Europe, and Africa. Through this work, she analyzed how effectively donations and humanitarian efforts were being used to fight human trafficking and made recommendations for how donors could make fiscally and socially responsible decisions. This project marked her entry into the world of global social justice work and strengthened her resolve to advocate for vulnerable populations.
At just 18 and 19 years old, KaylaVera took her passion for social justice to the next level by lobbying on Capitol Hill for an non-governmental organization (NGO). She met with her representatives, Congressman Mark Walker and Senator Thom Tillis, advocating for key issues close to her heart. This early advocacy experience sharpened her skills in policy dialogue, strategic communication, and navigating the political landscape, all while fueling her drive to create lasting change in communities.
Her ability to speak to policymakers and drive legislative change at such a young age is a testament to her commitment to shaping the world and advocating for those whose voices need amplification.
During her time as an undergraduate student at University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP), KaylaVera played a pivotal role in organizing Pony Palooza, an event focused on community engagement, youth empowerment, and advocacy. This initiative allowed her to further her commitment to advocacy and connect with students and the broader community to raise awareness on important issues.
Most recently, KaylaVera helped host a "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event at Meharry Medical College, aimed at raising awareness and funds for women affected by violence. Participants walked a mile to symbolically demonstrate solidarity with those who suffer from violence, while also encouraging open dialogue about these critical issues. The event brought together members of the community to highlight the ongoing struggles of women and to advocate for safer, more supportive environments.
Alongside her academic achievements, KaylaVera has proven herself as a digital strategist. She has helped her clients grow their digital presence, reaching over 25K followers. Through her social media expertise, she crafts content that not only boosts engagement but also raises awareness on crucial issues. Her digital strategies empower organizations and individuals alike to harness the power of the internet to foster connection and inspire action.
Across every initiative—from her first song at 14 to her policy work at Yale, from organizing college-wide advocacy events to amplifying voices through digital storytelling—KaylaVera has never lost sight of her purpose. She remains steadfast in her mission to raise awareness about both human trafficking and domestic violence—not just among teens, but adults as well. Her vision is one where education, healthcare, and community power come together to protect vulnerable lives and build a world where every person, regardless of age, gender, or background, feels safe, heard, and free.
In May 2025, KaylaVera will earn a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from Meharry Medical College's School of Global Health, equipping her with the knowledge and skills to address health inequities in communities. She is currently pursuing an MBA with a concentration in Healthcare Administration, combining her passion for healthcare with business acumen. She will graduate with her second masters in December 2025. As an aspiring physician, she envisions leveraging her diverse expertise in public health, healthcare administration, and medicine to create systemic change and advocate for marginalized populations.
